New Year, New You, New Pet…

With the New Year approaching, now is the perfect time to get your pet
started on the BARF® Diet. As many of us set New Year resolutions for ourselves,
set goals to eat right and stay active, it is only right that we set goals for
our beloved pets as well. Feeding raw is one of the most effective ways to
ensure you are meeting all of the nutritional requirements your pet needs to
thrive. A nutritionally advantaged dog will have increased energy, improved
stamina, and the ability to perform at a higher level than a dog fed a “fast
food” diet.

When I say “fast food,” I am referring to commercial kibble and canned
foods, fast and convenient for the owner, but not for the animal. In my 40+
years in the field of animal nutrition, I have consistently observed that while
feeding commercially cooked food may be feasible for pet parents, it is not
optimal for long-term health. Dogs fed highly processed diets often exhibit
digestive issues, skin and coat problems, chronic allergies, and inflammation,
which can eventually lead to degenerative disease.

The advice given to nutrition-minded humans is to eliminate highly
processed foods from their diet, and the same advice holds true for pets. The philosophy behind the BARF® Diet is to feed in a way that is biologically appropriate for the species. This means providing dogs with the foods Mother Nature designed them to eat raw meat, bones, and organs in balanced proportions that support natural digestion and nutrient absorption.

A raw diet supports the body at a cellular level by delivering nutrients in their most natural and bioavailable form. Enzymes, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and micronutrients remain intact when food is fed raw, allowing the dog’s digestive system to function as intended. Many pet parents who transition to a BARF® Diet report noticeable improvements in stool quality, dental health, coat shine, mobility, and overall vitality within weeks.

Most importantly, feeding a biologically appropriate diet is a proactive approach to health, not a reactive one. Rather than waiting for symptoms to appear and managing them with medications or specialty diets, raw feeding focuses on prevention and longevity. By nourishing your dog with real, species-appropriate food, you are supporting a stronger immune system, healthier aging, and a better quality of life starting now and continuing for years to come.
