National Poinsettia Day

Today is National Poinsettia day! While these are a fun and festive holiday plant, it is important to note the potential dangers of these plants to our pets.

This was not something that I was previously aware of, until I became a pet parent to my cat Poppy. She loves to play outdoors and so naturally when I started bringing plants inside our home, she was curious.

I quickly realized that she loves to chew on plants and play in the soil. I had to educate myself and be very careful about what plants I brought around her. Poinsettias are just one of the many plants that pose a potential danger to our pets.

Before purchasing any plants, here are some tips to ensure the plants are safe for all pets and what to do in the event that they are exposed to a plant that they shouldn’t be.

  • Do your research before bringing any new plants around any pets.
  • If they end up ingesting a plant that they are not supposed to, closely monitor them and contact the vet immediately.
  • According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) here is a list of toxic and non toxic plants for pets:

While Poinsettias are a beautiful plant, there are hundreds of options available that are not only beautiful, but safe for your pet as well. Don’t take the risk, and switch over to plants that are safe.

I am thankful I made the switch and that my fur baby Poppy is happier than ever. I am now at ease knowing that all the plants in my home are not only safe for myself, but also my fur baby.

As always, feel free to give us a call at 866-282-2273 or send us an email to info@barfworld.com with any questions or concerns you may have. We would love to chat about some safe plant options for pets!
