Raw Meat Diet for Puppies

Adding a puppy to your family is an exciting and stressful time. Ensuring that you have everything your pup needs when you bring them home can be overwhelming. Making the transition to their forever home is a lifetime commitment. The decisions we make for our puppies early on can have a long-term impact as they learn house training and good eating habits. Proper nutrition can influence good behavior and is a critical part of their overall health and development into adulthood.

The Importance of Proper Nutrition

Choosing the right diet is one of the most critical decisions you'll make for your puppy. Puppies require a diet that supports their rapid growth, brain development, and immune system. A biologically appropriate raw food (BARF) diet is an excellent option, as it mirrors what their ancestors ate in the wild and provides the nutrients they need to thrive.

A common concern is the quality of pet food that we choose to feed our puppy. There are many pet foods on the market that may not be as good as they may seem as they can contain an inadequate amount of protein, vitamins, calcium and phosphorus, all of which are critical to proper bone development.

The Importance of Human-Grade Pet Food Ingredients

The phrase "human grade" in pet food refers to the final product's legal suitability and approval as human food. It's "edible."

Foods intended for humans are subject to far stricter regulations than those intended for animals. The FDA and USDA oversee human foods and regularly audit the manufacturing facilities that produce food for humans, in contrast to the loosely regulated pet food business.

Legally, pet foods can only be deemed 100% human grade if they are produced in facilities that meet human grade standards and have undergone the inspections and approvals required to be classified as such.

Your pet can thrive on a raw diet rich in fresh, unprocessed ingredients.

Benefits of a Raw Meat Diet for Puppies

  • Boosts Immunity: High-quality proteins and essential vitamins strengthen the immune system.
  • Promote Healthy Growth: Proper calcium-to-phosphorus ratios ensure strong bones and muscles for proper skeletal development. All of our diets are complete and balanced for all life stages.
  • Support Cognitive Development: Omega-3 fatty acids, found in raw diets, are essential for brain development and stimulation.
  • Safe to Feed:All our diets go through an HPP process to eliminate harmful bacteria.

Transitioning Your Puppy to a BARF Diet

A proper schedule and consistency is key to getting them started on the BARF Diet. Switching your puppy to a raw food diet can be done safely and gradually:

  1. Start Slowly: Begin by feeding small amounts of raw food at separate time from their current diet. Do this until you achieve the full recommended serving per day.
  2. Observe Their Response: Watch for any digestive changes and adjust portions as needed.
  3. Follow a Schedule: Feed your puppy at consistent times to establish routine eating habits.

Other Essential Care Tips for Your New Puppy

  1. House Training: Consistency and patience are key. Take your puppy outside regularly, especially after meals.
  2. Socialization: Introduce your puppy to different people, pets, and environments early on to develop confidence. You can do this safely by having your pet leashed until they are comfortable.
  3. Routine Veterinary Care: Schedule regular check-ups to monitor their growth and health.
  4. Enrichment and Exercise: Provide mental stimulation through toys and regular physical activity to prevent boredom and promote good behavior.

Building a Lifetime Bond

The basis for a lasting relationship is laid during the first few months of your puppy's existence. You're laying the groundwork for a happy and healthy connection by putting their health and wellbeing first through appropriate care, training, and nutrition.
