The History of the name BARF®

Dr. Ian Billinghurst, an Australian veterinarian who pioneered canine nutrition and raw feeding, coined the term BARF®. He started pushing for a return to a diet that more closely resembles what dogs evolved to eat in the wild in the 1990’s.

He created the acronym. BARF®, which stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food.

It later gained widespread recognition as Bones and Raw Food. The same philosophy is reflected in both definitions, giving cats and dogs a diet based on their biological makeup rather than contemporary convenience.

The True Meaning of "Biologically Appropriate"

Heavily processed, high-carbohydrate meals are not meant for dogs and cats.

Their anatomy reveals a very different narrative:

• Sharp teeth designed to rip meat
• Short digestive tracts are built to break down proteins quickly.
• High stomach acidity to process bone and uncooked proteins
• An innate desire to eat entire prey, including muscle, flesh, bone, and internal organs.

This normal consumption is replicated by a biologically suitable diet, which supplies nutrients in the form that the body recognizes and uses most effectively and efficiently.

Why the Name Is Important

The name BARF® was chosen to question the status quo rather
than for a shock effect.

Pet owners were taught that processed kibble was the best option for decades. However, trailblazers such as Dr. Billinghurst, and Robert Mueller, Sr. resisted by posing a straightforward question.

Why do we feed carnivores a diet that is completely different from what they would naturally consume?

The phrase "BARF" evolved into a movement as a
means of conveying and simplifying a potent concept.

To be honest, many make fun of the name BARF® on the internet and right to our face! It's simple for reviewers to laugh, misinterpret, or reject what they don't thoroughly understand. However, the truth remains unaffected by debate or negative criticism. If anything, it emphasizes how detached modern pet food has gotten from the natural world.
