How to Help a Picky Eater

Is your pet turning up their nose at mealtime? If your dog is a picky eater, it can be frustrating and concerning. While some dogs will eat anything in sight, others take their time, making it challenging for pet parents to make sure they get proper nutrition. Fortunately, there are several strategies you can try to encourage your pup to eat well. Here are some tips to help your picky eater develop healthy eating habits.

Rule Out Health Issues

Before assuming your dog is just being finicky, it’s important to rule out any underlying medical issues. Loss of appetite can sometimes be a sign of dental problems, gastrointestinal issues, or other health concerns. If your dog’s pickiness is sudden or accompanied by other symptoms like weight loss, vomiting, or lethargy, consult your vet.

Consistency is Key

Avoid leaving food out all day, as free feeding can lead to a lack of interest in meals. Instead, offer food for about 15-20 minutes and then take it away if they don’t eat. This teaches your dog that mealtime is not an all-day event. Dogs love and thrive on their routines!

Choose High-Quality, Nutritious Diet

Some dogs may not be interested in eating because their food lacks nutritional value. Look for high-quality dog food with real meat, vegetables, and wholesome ingredients (like the BARF World diet). Try avoiding artificial preservatives, and fillers that may not be beneficial to your pup’s health.

Make Mealtime More Appealing

If your dog is turning away from their food, try adding some variety to make it more enticing. Here are a few ideas:

  • Pan Sear: Slightly heating their food can release aromas that make it more appealing, just don't cook it too long, you don't want to get rid of the enzymes.
  • Add a topper: Mix in a small amount toppers, bone broth, or plain pumpkin to enhance flavor.
  • Try different textures: Some dogs prefer wet, while others may enjoy freeze-dried food, or you can do a combo of both.

5. Limit Table Scraps

If your dog is filling up on human food, they may be less inclined to eat their regular meals.

Avoid feeding table scraps, especially if your pup is developing picky eating habits. Stick to nutritious and portion-controlled single ingredient treats that complement their diet.

Engage Their Natural Instincts

Dogs are natural hunters and foragers, so making mealtime more interactive can encourage eating. Try using puzzle feeders, slow-feeder bowls, or food-dispensing toys to stimulate their interest in food.

Avoid Constantly Switching Foods

While it may be tempting to keep trying different brands or flavors to entice your picky eater, frequent changes can create bad habits. Dogs may start expecting something new each time and refuse to eat their regular food. If you need to transition to a new food, do so gradually by mixing the old and new food over several days.

Stay Patient and Positive

Dealing with a picky eater requires patience. Avoid pressuring your dog to eat, as this can create stress around mealtime. Instead, maintain a positive attitude and reinforce good eating habits with praise and encouragement.
