Why Do Dogs Need More Hydration In The Summer?

As the temperature rises, staying hydrated is more important for everyone, including our dogs. While many pet owners focus on keeping their dogs cool during hot summer days, hydration is one of the key factors in supporting your dog's overall health, energy, and well-being.

Whether your dog enjoys long walks, playtime in the backyard, swimming, or just relaxing in the sun, making sure they stay properly hydrated can help them feel their best all summer long.

Why Hydration Matters

Water plays an essential role in almost every function of your dog’s body. Complete hydration help:

  • Regulate body temperature
  • Supports healthy digestion
  • Delivers nutrients throughout the body
  • Lubricates joints
  • Maintains healthy kidney function
  • Supports healthy skin and coat

During the hot summer months, dogs lose more fluids through panting and increased activity, making it easier for them to become dehydrated.

Signs Your Dog May Be Dehydrated

It's crucial for you to recognize the early signs of dehydration in your dog before it becomes more serious. These are the signs to watch out for:

  • Excessive panting
  • Dry nose
  • Sluggishness or low energy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sunken eyes
  • Sticky or thick drool
  • Less skin stretch

If you notice any of these symptoms, offer them fresh water immediately and contact your veterinarian of choice if symptoms continue.

Why Summer Increases Hydration Needs

Just like us, dogs need more water as the temperature rises. The summer heat causes dogs to work harder to regulate their body temperature through panting, which causes extensive water loss. Active dogs, senior dogs, puppies, and dogs that spend a lot of time outside may need even more hydration than usual.

Factors that increase water needs include:

  • Hot weather
  • Increased excercise
  • Outdoor activities
  • Travel
  • Swimming
  • Dry climates

Raw Feeding Can Help Support Hydration

One of the benefits of feeding a raw diet is the moisture content.

Unlike kibble, which contains very little moisture, raw food contains more natural hydration. Our BARF chubs are naturally a great source of hydration, as they contain a high-water content. This extra moisture can help support healthy hydration levels while providing biologically appropriate nutrition.

Many BARF World products are rich in moisture, helping dogs receive hydration through their daily meals in addition to drinking fresh water.

Tips to Keep Your Dog Hydrated This Summer

1. Always Provide Fresh Water

Keep clean, cool water available at all times. Refresh water often, especially on hot summer days.

2.Bring Water on Adventures

Always bring a portable bowl with water whether you are hiking, camping, or visiting the dog park.

3. Feed Moisture Rich Foods

Adding raw food to your dog's diet can help increase moisture intake.

4. Limit Activity During the Hot Hours of The Day

Plan your daily walk and outdoor activities during the cooler mornings or evenings.

5. Offer Frozen Treats

Frozen raw treats can provide a refreshing way to help dogs cool down while enjoying a nutritious snack.

Give Your Dog a Healthy Summer

Correct hydration is one of the easiest ways to help your dog stay active, healthy, and comfortable during the summer months. By combining fresh water, a smart summer routine, and moisture-rich nutrition, you can help your dog enjoy every adventure the summer season has to offer.
